Summer Diaries: My experience with Boston Consulting Group – Harshal Singh (BM)

Work hard on CVs for a shortlist and then practice a wide variety of case interviews.

Where did you do your summer internship?

The Boston Consulting Group

What was the role offered?

Role offered was that of Summer Associate – equivalent to Senior Associate.

The summer interns are assigned to a case team working on a client problem. Within this case, a module or two are assigned with the expectation to be able to work independently on the same. Both the case and the module assigned can vary widely.

Tell us about the GD and interview process of the company.

BCG does not have any GD or interview process. There is something called a case interview where the interviewer gives a client problem to solve or a guesstimate.

What was your approach for preparing for the process? Any specific preparation you did for this company?

All the shortlisted candidates made groups of three and we started by solving cases from casebooks of various national and international B-schools. Towards the end, I did a few case interviews with senior batch BCG interns and my BCG assigned buddy.

Tell us about the internship project you worked on. (Describe in timeline/stages)

I worked with a consumer durables client to improve their bottom line. Other project details are confidential.

Tell us about the pre-internship and post-internship processes (homework you had to do before the official internship period, orientation process and PPO opportunities)

Pre internship – The senior batch BCG PPO holders took some session on excel, what-to-expect and internship experiences. There was no other preparation.

Post internship – PPO result are directly released shortly after the last day of internship

What was your key learning from the internship period?

It was about how to think in an environment where there is a lot of unstructured data and how to build consensus for your ideas with multiple senior stakeholders.

What were the key challenges that you faced during your internship?

Building consensus for my ideas with people who were very senior and more experienced than I was.

How relevant were the concepts taught in the classroom to the situations and pre-requisites of your internship?

Not very relevant. However, excel courses (MIS) and projects requiring PPT making proved useful.

How effective was the internship in terms of helping you make a choice about your career?

Internship allowed me to get a first-hand experience about the pros & cons of the job.

Would you like to work for the same organisation if given a chance?

Yes. BCG is a very exciting place to be and it offers a very steep learning curve.

Do you have past work-experience? If yes, did you find any significant change during your summer internship?

Yes. I worked for a little more than 3 years at Deloitte consulting as a part of the technology consulting practice. One of the biggest changes was in terms of the sharp increase in responsibilities.

How did you like the work culture of the company? (Mention the contribution of your mentor/other employees of the company during the execution of your project)

BCG has a very good culture. All team members and alumni are supportive of the interns.

Share a memorable incident from your summer internship.

On the second weekend of my internship, we went on a trip to Mussoorie for a case team outing. It was much fun!

What suggestions/advice (specific preparation strategy) would you advise to juniors?

Work hard on CVs for a shortlist and then practice a wide variety of case interviews.
