Sigma Activities

This year also, with the commencement of the new term, Team SIGMA started its many anticipated events with zeal in heart to help others. The first program to start was Basic Computer Learning Program (BCLP). Every Sunday afternoon (1:30PM – 3:30PM) SIGMA conducts computer classes for the evening batch students of Loyola School in the college Computer Lab (CC Lab). With a greater batch strength this year and more structured classes, we aimed to take this program a step further. This program provides many under privileged students (of class X) the opportunity to obtain practical computer education and learn skills that will not just help them clear their board examinations but also add as a valuable skill in obtaining jobs post school.  This program is a round the year program and every week many students get benefitted from it. A unique aspect is that Team SIGMA helps in mobilizing the energy of fellow students as they volunteer and do their part of society. The current batch comprises 80 students.

‘Mentor-Mentee’ is a promising new initiative conceptualized by SIGMA. It is an extension of the various ongoing teaching and counseling programs conducted by SIGMA aimed at the development of children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. The counseling offered through the ‘Mentor-Mentee’ program will not be restricted to only career counseling but will include all aspects of counseling that a child may require e.g. moral, parental issues etc. It is planned that one student each from the senior and junior batch will mentor a particular mentee. The sessions is planned for every fortnight.

This year, SIGMA, in association with ValHalla, had taken up the cause to empower women who are part of the Devdasi system by collecting funds from the XL Community for Milaap. Milaap (www.milaap.org), a leading Micro-finance NGO aimed at giving out sustainable short term loans for the underprivileged breaking the vicious cycle of poverty.  Milaap supported MASS an NGO working in this field to rescues women from this exploiting social system. This year in ValHalla Rs. 1 Lakh was donated for this cause.

Finally SIGMA also arranged for performance of Prince Dance Group at ValHalla which comprises of the dancers from the backward section and has prominently featured in India’s Got Talent on channel “Colors”.
