Students of XLRI under the banner of Samarthya – The Human Potential Centre, a student body dedicated to the cause of the development of potential of school children of Jamshedpur, organized ‘Disha ‘16’ on the B-school campus grounds to provide career guidance to students.

Disha, the career counseling fair, was attended by over 150 students from class IX to XII along with their parents. Children from all major schools such as Carmel Junior College, DAV Public School, DBMS, KSMS, Loyola MNPS, Narbheram Hansraj High School, St. Mary’s English High School & Rajendra Vidyalaya participated in the event, and were visibly engaged by the many speakers arranged for by Samarthya.

The event opened with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the chief guests –, Padma Shri awardee Premlata Agarwal, La Gravitea founder Avinash Dugar, Fr. David Vincent and XLRI Faculty – Sanjeev Varshney & Jitendra Singh. Each of the distinguished judges tried to impress upon the children the values of hardwork, dedication and focus. Professor Jitendra Singh, enthused the children with the moto of “Zindagi na milegi dobara” and exhorted them to not take the beaten path, but to find something which truly motivates and pushes them towards excellence. Mrs. Premlata drew parallels from her life, where she balanced her work as a home maker, a mother and her passion as a mountaineer, and eventually became the first Indian woman mountaineer to scale the Seven Summits, the seven highest continental peaks of the world. Mr. Avinash Dugar, stated how he shifted to his true calling and passion, after years of corporate service and how doing what one truly loves, energizes and helps create something truly extraordinary. Fr. David Vincentwas instrumental in counselling students on various aspects of career selection during the career counselling fair.

Disha 2016 saw a lot of enthusiasm from the participating students as well as parents in talking to students of XLRI from diverse career streams present in over 20 kiosks set up for easy interaction. The participants had their queries addressed by the counselors for various career options that ranging from Science and Research, BBA/BBS, Fashion, Social Sector, Economics, Literature, Advertising, History, IT, Electronics and Instrumentation, Psychology, Economics, Civil Services, Bank PO, Defense Forces to Sports and Music.

Smriti, one of the conveners of Samarthya seemed happy with the response of the participants and said, “It is so great to see students having their doubts cleared by people they can easily talk to. I wish I had been able to receive similar guidance at school level. That is why, we at Samarthya, have been working hard to provide some guidance to school students of Jamshedpur.”

However, the opportunity and fun for the students does not end with Disha. Samarthya in association with Ensemble -2016, the biggest management festival in India, is organizing “Back to the roots”, a quizzing extravaganza at 9 AM on 13th November 2016 at Tata Auditorium, XLRI. It will be a great opportunity for the school students of Jamshedpur to showcase their general knowledge and love for quizzing.
