XL Utsav – Celebrating XL Culture

XL-Utsav held on October 26, 2014 meant for bringing together the students, the faculty, the administrative staff and the extended family of XLRI to celebrate the old and extremely important part of XL culture also saw some entertaining performances organised by Dracula.

While the senior students performed to Bollywood tracks, the junior batch danced to the tunes of popular advertisements and theme songs from across the world. The stakes were high at XLRI, when the faculty and students locked horns on the sports field, during one of the most awaited events- XL Utsav- one of the many aspects of the popular (and the envied upon) XL Culture – witnessed a long range of sports and cultural events.

The stalls for regional cuisines, set up by the students, was an absolute delight for the foodies of the institute. Throughout the day, Students and Faculty competed against each other in various sports. XL Utsav also had XL ANTAKSHARI – a fun filled event with singing, music trivia and charades!

The day began with a mesmerising display of skill and competitiveness in the badminton court by both faculty and students. Every single one of the matches was a nail biter. A fitting prologue to a day that put on display the famed ‘XL Culture’. At the end of the event, the spoils were split evenly. While the students won the doubles match, the faculty won the singles match. After the badminton match, there were a lot of fun games and activities for the kids in XL Family. Lemon-spoon race, sack race and balloon buster witnessed enthusiastic participation from the kids. When the whole event was anchored by Fr James, the spirit of XL Utsav was taken a notch higher.

The stakes were high at XLRI, when the faculty and students locked horns on the sports field, during one of the most awaited events- XL Utsav- one of the many aspects of the popular (and the envied upon) XL Culture – witnessed a long range of sports and cultural events.

After the fun and games, it was time for tug of war. With the faculty team on one side and students on other, neither team was ready to give in. Six minutes later, faculty’s team was adjudged the winner. The day was far from over and the students were determined to bounce back in the cricket match, which they did. Every single boundary was met with cheers and every wicket was met with the sound of despair. To top it all, the match had a very entertaining commentary. The fortunes swung back and forth till the penultimate over of the match. But the students managed to cling on and emerge victorious.

After breaking for lunch, carrom and chess matches were held. It was a clean sweep by the faculty 3-0. The excitement was building up for the football match in the evening, with both students and faculty putting together their best teams. The starting whistle blew and for the next one hour, the whole college witnessed magic unfold before them as a spellbinding football match ensued. When the final whistle blew, students won the match 3-1.

From captivating solo songs to awe-inspiring instrumentals, the cultural night had it all.

After a delectable matchup of skill, everyone was looking forward to a feast for eyes and ears during the cultural nite. The program started by 7pm with Antakshari. This time though, there was no faculty vs students competition. The teams were formed by both faculty and students together and everyone sang their hearts out to win. After antakshari, there were performances from the faculty, their spouses, kids, and students. Each performance was a breath-taking display of talent and it was quite visible from the crowd’s reaction as each performance was met with a deafening round of applause. From captivating solo songs to awe-inspiring instrumentals, the cultural night had it all. The food stalls set up by the different state committees were a foodie’s dream come true as delicacies from all corners of the country were just a few steps away. The magical evening was completed by a mesmerizing performance by the Bodhi tree.

When the curtains fell on one of the most memorable days of last year, we were all once again reminded of how lucky we were to be a part of XL Family. As time passes, we may forget a lot of things from our lives. But this day is never going to be one of them.
