Silent Auction- Spreading Smiles

A one-of-a-kind Silent Auction was conducted on XLRI campus on 23rd October as a part of Diwali celebrations. The Silent Auction is an annual charity drive where memorabilia collected from the students and faculty of XLRI is auctioned off and the proceeds are then given for charity. This year the proceeds were donated for the treatment of Lung cancer patients in Tata Memorial Hospital.

This annual philanthropic event is conducted by CII Young Indians a student club in XLRI. The club members collected the various artifacts and items to be auctioned from students and faculty. Over 250 items were on display during the auction this year. The Auction started at 7:30 once the Diwali celebrations were done. Students and faculty alike thronged the stalls were the items were arranged and the bids started flowing in.

The items ranged from a rare collectible lamp to Leaf painting. Apart from the various books and posters contributed by the students, artistic paintings and wall decors were contributed by professors.A unique feature of this auction is that services were also auctioned this time. The services offered by Professors like a dinner for four by Manish Singhal or 3 chess games by Professor Sabayaschi Sengupta were very much in demand.

The total amount raised this year had risen by over 25% when compared to the previous years. Almost all of the items on display were sold with the price ranging to from few hundreds and several thousands. Anita Israni the secretary of the CII Yi XLRI Net, said “The students get a chance to bid for rare items and services which they might not be able to get otherwise. Also since the proceeds from the event goes directly to a noble cause the participants had no inhibitions in outbidding each other!

Also the fact that this year the event coincided with Diwali celebrations ensured that XLRI fraternity were inclined to spread the happiness.”

XLRI takes immense pride in the fact that it is a socially conscious B-school, which true to its motto makes efforts for the greater good of the society. Events like the silent auction imbibe the spirit of giving back in the students and the faculty act as responsible role models by leading with the contributions every year during the auction. The Silent Auction was a successful affair this year with the contributions and the excitement shown by the XLRI fraternity widely exceeding expectations.
