XLDiaries – An Outbound Experience – Priyadarshi Dasgupta

From the various corners of India, some of the smartest minds of the generation travelled to Jamshedpur, in early June, to undertake an education in management studies. Little did they realize the storm that was about to hit them.

As we trudged through the first month, fighting to keep up with ongoing barrage of assignments, CV points, tests, quizzes and bhasad, there was never a moment to switch off. From deadline to deadline, we moved, like sand in an hourglass, barely being done before being flipped over. So, when we finally got a chance to have the outbound experience, it was the first chance to switch off for a while. Back into Mother Nature’s arms we went, looking for respite from the hectic schedule. Mobile phones switched off, and cut off from society, we finally interacted each other freely. As we competed to finish obstacle courses, and jump off a cliff like a flying fox; we learned about each other’s abilities and fears. Going through a muddy cave, stretching one way then another, overcoming each challenge as it came made us appreciate the simple joys of life.

Spending two and a half days in the lap of nature, under supervisors absolutely unwilling to let the intensity down, I realized how long it had been since I pushed myself. Going out of one’s comfort zone is an absolute essential to grow as a human being, and here I was, doing something I had never imagined myself doing. As I saw my classmates lining up to swing over the Tarzan pit over and over again, not giving up till they cleared it, I was reminded of my childhood when I would be stubborn till I got my own way. When we made a raft to cross a river, arguing the entire way about the best way to row, I realized that though I had paid the college a hefty amount to arm me with lots of knowledge, it was here that I was truly learning.
